Political Correctness hampering ‘Free Speech’ in UK universities

They are supposed to be bastions of freedom of expression but new research shows many of today’s universities in the UK are becoming citadels of censorship.

A new poll for Spiked magazine shows that university authorities and student bodies are pulling plug on debates and banning societies deemed “controversial”. From the inane ban on wearing sombreros (deemed too racist) at Birmingham University to stopping copies of the Sun newspaper (too sexist) in student shops being sold to the far more sinister clampdown on debates such as a ban on discussing abortion at Oxford University and the philosophical Nietzsche Club at University College London.

The fear of give offence is the main reason appears to be the driving force behind these restrictions which hardly prepares students for life in the real world.
