Hungary could block EU 'empire building'

Nationalism is on the rise in Hungary. Now released from the shackles of communism, Hungarian nationalists are keen to maintain their political independence and economic self-reliance.
The EU crisis has prompted calls from leading members of the EU elite to expand their power across the continent. In Hungary, even establishment politicians are opposing this power grab along with the radical nationalists from the resurgent Jobbik.
Gyorgy Matolcsy, an economics minister from the moderate nationalist Fidesz party said he wants a "Europe of the nations", not a "European empire" and that Hungary should stay out of the failing EU-sponsored Euro currency union. He added: "The centralisation of a European empire, that is to say the future strengthening of Brussels, is contrary to our interests, because it erodes the independence of the Hungarian state, necessary for the country's economic development."

June the 4th is also national solidarity day in Hungary and attempts are also being made by nationalists in Hungary to help ethnic Hungarians in neighbouring countries much to the consternation of liberal observers, particularly in Germany.
