Civil Liberty and the Guardian

12th April 2007

Civil Liberty correspondent

Once again, the Guardian newspaper has been caught telling lies about Civil Liberty in order to ratchet up the State's interest, via the Electoral Commission, in the only human and civil rights group that challenges the liberal-left monopoly on such matters.

In an article published in the newspaper on Thursday, the 12th of April, which is full of lies and inaccuracies, Matthew Taylor, the Guardian journalist ostensibly responsible for the piece claims the Metropolitan Police are taking an interest in the Electoral Commission's ongoing inquiry into Civil Liberty, which started because of a fabricated Guardian article at the beginning of March this year.

Civil Liberty is in the process of drawing up a response to the Electoral Commission's media inspired witchhunt, but after contacting the Metropolitan Police can immediately rebuff the Guardian’s wilder fabrications in this new 'story'.

First, the claim that "officers from Scotland Yard's domestic extremism desk took up up the case, after a series of links between the BNP and fundraising group Civil Liberty were revealed" is a false statement and was confirmed as such by James Nadin of the Metropolitan Police's Press Bureau on the morning of Thursday, the 12th of April, tha date of publication.

Moreover, the claim that police from the Met are "taking a lead in the inquiry" was also denied by Mr Nadin, who confirmed the Guardian had been in touch, but the allegation of police involvement was false.

It seems the Guardian, at the behest of the far-left Searchlight organisation, are attempting to engage in trial by media and force the Electoral Commission's hand in this matter. We are confident the Electoral Commission will resist such efforts and carry out its affairs in a professional and impartial manner. We have every confidence that Civil Liberty will be absolved of any transgression and are happy to expose the Guardian’s lies and their extremist and criminal connections on this website.
